Essentials of English Language 1 is a different kind of student text/ workbook. The text is presented as a real-Iife classroom scenario, involving a teacher, Mr Wilson, and eight of his first-year secondary school English students -Angela, Susie, Jung Tong, Albert, Michael, Rebecca, Manu and Jane. The students are presented as cartoon characters who ask questions about language that they then answer for themselves as they engage with the 'lessons' and learn about language through a range of interesting reading, writing and research activities.
All the grammar and other language terms are carefully defined and are cross-referenced in a simple index at the back of the book.
Essentials of English Language 1 is the first in a two-book series which forms the basis for a comprehensive, self-contained English grammar and language programme. As a write-on book, it is ideal for use both in the classroom and at home.

Essentials of English Language 2 returns us to Shackleton High School and those redoubtable students, Angela, Susie, Jung Tong, Albert, Michael, Rebecca, Manu and Jane. This time, though, they're a couple of years older and they are now in Ms Grimshaw's class. And yes, at the start of the year they don't quite know what to make of her.
'The students are just as curious about language as they ever were and questions fly thick and fast as they engage with a range of interesting reading, writing and research activities. There are all sorts of ways in which these activities tie in with NCEA and its various achievement standards, especially those asking students to write in a range of genres (1.1 and 1.2), explore the language and think critically about a variety of texts (1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6) and conduct research (1.9).
